This is the Luzhniki Stadium, built in 1856. The stadium hosted the 1980 Moscow Olympics. It is now used mainly for football and is the home ground for Spartak Moscow and Torpeda Moscow and will be the venue for the 2008 Champions league final.

It is the biggest sports stadium in Russia, has a capacity of 84,745 seats and was once called Grand Arena of the Central Lenin Stadium. It also uses artifical grass due to the cold Moscow winter.

It was home for the Moscow Olympics in 1980 which became infamous for the US boycott over the war in Afghanistan.

An incident that didn't make the headlines was the Luzhniki disaster in 1982, when a human crush resulted in 66 lives at a football match. Many claimed the number of victims was as high as 340. The incident was finally reported in 1989 and for several years, no matches were held at the stadium during october in order to stop relatives from laying flowers there. The crush was the result of a last-minute goal in a UEFA Cup tie between Moscow Spartak and Dutch side Haarlem, when fans try to re-enter the stadium.
