However Keegan's 12 goals helped guide the club to tenth in the league, and 'France Football' magazine awarded him that season's Ballon d'Or.

1978/9 was a remarkable season for Hamburg and their English striker. Guided by new manager Branko Zebec the club won the league for the first time in 19 years, with Keegan picking up 17 Bundesliga goals as well as a second Ballon d'Or. He remains the only British player to have won the coverted award twice, let alone in consecutive years.

1979/80 was a season of near misses for Hamburg. They failed to defend their Bundelisga title by just two points as Bayern Munich became champions, and in May they reached the European Cup Final...

That summer Keegan moved back to England, his suprise signing for second division Southampton for a record fee having already been announced in February.
Undoubtedly Keegan's time at the famous port town is among the most succesful overseas moves by any British footballer in history.
